I first heard about “The Good Life” when I watched a TED talk by Robert Waldinger on what makes a happy life. I loved the TED talk so much that I had to get a copy of this book for myself! One of the most important factors for happiness in life as described in his book and described in this book is the importance and value of meaningful relationships with others in our lives. One of the most impactful takeaways was participant’s responses to a particular question: “Who could you call in the middle of the night if you were sick or scared?” The happiest people in the study had a long list of people that they could call in the middle of the night and receive help from, while people who reported the least happiness could not list a single person.
This shifted my focus to prioritizing maintaining the relationships I have in my life and opened my heart and mind to build meaningful relationships with new people in my life and even total strangers too during travels or when out and about too. Some of the happiest people in the study had good relationships even with casual contacts such as their neighborhood grocery clerk or coffee barista as mentioned in the video, and even the Harvard study questioners as well! This is just the tip of the iceberg for the enlightening material in the book. If you would like to learn everything about what it takes to lead a happy and fulfilling life and all of the benefits associated with doing this in your own life, this is absolutely the book for you!
